Personalized Care To Reduce Your Risk of Cancer
ProMedica Cancer Institute’s High Risk Clinic is dedicated to supporting people with a higher-than-average risk of developing certain cancers. We work with you to create a personalized plan that focuses on reducing your chance of getting cancer, as well as offering early screening and diagnosis, which can make treatment more effective when cancer is detected in its early stages.

Who Can Benefit
Patients with a higher-than-average risk of developing cancer can benefit from the High Risk Clinic. The following factors put you at a higher-than-average risk of developing cancer:
- Inherited genetic mutations
- Family history of cancer
- Ancestry (race and origins of your family)
- Certain viral infections such as HPV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C or HIV
- Individual risk factors (e.g., smoking, excess weight, drinking alcohol)
- Environmental risk factors (e.g., chemicals, exposure to sunlight)
Your Initial Consultation
On your first visit to the clinic, the team will review your risk factors, including family and personal health histories, review any tests, blood tests, scans or genetic testing that you have completed and perform a physical exam.
We will order additional tests and make referrals to specialists when necessary, including urologists, gastroenterologists, colorectal surgeons, breast surgeons, gynecologists or gynecologic oncologists, and surgical oncologists.
From these findings, we will create a personalized risk management plan that includes enhanced surveillance to monitor for cancer and find it early. This may include risk-reducing lifestyle activities and connecting you to any available programs to reduce your risk.
