From Hopkins Street to East Second Street to today’s modern campus, Defiance Regional Hospital has delivered compassionate, community-centered care —evolving from a small local hospital into a modern regional health system.

The hospital is formally established by Dr. J. J. Reynolds and Dr. G. A. Rigrish, laying the foundation for what would become a lasting community institution.

<time>1903</time>
Drs. Reynolds and Rigrish performed the hospital’s first surgical procedure at what was then known as Maplewood Hospital.

<time>1904</time>
A new brick hospital is constructed on Hopkins Street, featuring an operating room and 14 patient beds.

<time>1913</time>
The Defiance Hospital Association is formed and begins leasing the hospital, bringing structured governance and community oversight.

<time>1916</time>
Local residents rally to raise $3,500 to keep the hospital open, underscoring strong public support during difficult times.

<time>1921</time>
The Defiance Exchange Club raises funds to purchase the hospital and negotiates a new lease.

Following renovations, the hospital reopens to patients, renewed and stabilized for the future.

The hospital is purchased by John C. Budd, ushering in a new era of leadership.

Manufacturer C. M. Willock donates a 35 acre golf course; the former clubhouse is reconstructed into a modern 30 bed hospital, significantly expanding capacity.

A 10 bed wing is added, further strengthening inpatient services.

The Defiance Hospital Guild is organized to support the hospital’s Mission. That same year, the hospital is valued at $75,000.

Hospital property is transferred to the City of Defiance, and ground is broken for a new facility on East Second Street.

The new Defiance Municipal Hospital officially opens, marking a major milestone in public health infrastructure.

Hospital operations transition to Defiance Hospital, Inc., establishing a new operational model.

A $210,000 addition is completed, expanding the hospital to 34 beds.

A new surgical suite and recovery area are added, advancing surgical care.

<time>1967</time>
The emergency department undergoes expansion to better meet community needs.

A $1.8 million expansion project is completed, significantly modernizing hospital services.

The hospital affiliates with ProMedica, connecting Defiance to a broader regional health system.

A new, state of the art hospital facility opens, designed to emphasize healing environments and specialized care.

A second building opens to expand outpatient services, including pediatric rehabilitation, supporting care closer to home.
