Mason Friesner's journey with ProMedica Toledo Hospital began on Sept. 11, 2020, when he joined the patient transport team. At the time, Friesner was a freshman at the University of Toledo, majoring in business marketing. Inspired by ProMedica's tuition assistance program, he saw an opportunity to grow within the organization.
It was during his time in patient transport that Friesner discovered a passion for health care and recognized the opportunity to make a positive impact in his community.
After two years, Friesner transitioned to a part-time role and expanded his responsibilities by joining the workforce development team in hospital education. He helped lead the revitalization of the Safe Patient Handling program, managing and teaching safe patient handling practices to staff.
Six months later, Friesner saw an opportunity to advance his career when a position opened on the Toledo Hospital security team. He applied and received the role, and officially left patient transport to take on a part-time role in security while continuing his work in workforce development.
While in security, Friesner was presented with an exciting opportunity by Director of Security Don Sullivan and Police Captain Dan Paez. They introduced him to a new program that allows security officers to be sponsored in the Owens Professional Law Enforcement Certificate program, preparing them to become police officers.
Friesner shares that his initial response to the proposal wasn’t one of certainty. “I wasn't sure if this was something I wanted to do at first. I was a few months away from graduating with my bachelor's in business marketing from the University of Toledo and thought I had it all planned out,” Friesner shares.
However, after some thought and consideration, Friesner decided to pursue the opportunity. “The more I thought and prayed about it with my wife I could see this was a new direction God was leading me in for my life. I know now that this was my calling, and I am very thankful that they approached me.”
Friesner graduated with his bachelor's in business marketing from The University of Toledo in May 2024 and began the Police Academy in August. He graduated on Dec. 16, passed his state exam, and is now serving as a police officer at Toledo Hospital.
Friesner's four years with ProMedica have not only allowed him to give back to his community but also helped him discover a newfound purpose. Through his various roles, he gained confidence and developed the ability to connect with people from all walks of life.
“My past roles have impacted the way I work day to day. From having the confidence to talk to anyone, being able to build relationships with my peers, and knowing what is expected of me,” Friesner shares.
For Friesner, the most rewarding part of his journey has been the opportunity to grow personally and professionally while making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
“My favorite part about working for ProMedica is that every day is different. Each day you have a brand new interaction that is completely different from the day before,” Friesner shares. “Being able to help my community and serve my hospital has given me great purpose in my life and I am thankful that I found a job at ProMedica Toledo Hospital and was able to grow and move up to where I am today.”
