Christina Camick, MD, is a board-certified and fellowship-trained surgeon specializing in breast surgical oncology at ProMedica. Dr. Camick was influenced to pursue a career in cancer care after seeing some of her own family members battle the disease. She takes pride in treating each patient with the same compassion and care she would want her own family to receive.
Dr. Camick has a true passion for breast surgical oncology, and every day she performs her best work so her patients can live their best lives.
When did you know you wanted to go into medicine?
I always enjoyed science growing up and was fascinated by biology and anatomy classes. I started in pharmacy school as an undergraduate student. After working in a retail pharmacy, I decided that I really enjoyed the field of medicine but wanted to pursue an area that was more hands on, so I decided to apply to medical school.
What drew you to breast surgical oncology?
I loved my surgery rotations as a medical student and that is when I knew that I wanted to be a surgeon. My love for surgery and personal experience with family members affected by cancer diagnoses led me to pursue breast surgical oncology.
Breast cancer treatment is constantly evolving from a medical and surgical standpoint to not only prolong life, but to improve quality of life after treatment. Working with a multidisciplinary team, I am able to provide the latest, evidence-based care to my patients.
What part of your job motivates you most to come to work every day?
My patients. I feel incredibly honored to be able to work with each patient on an individual basis to determine what is the best course of treatment for her. Every breast cancer journey is different for every patient. This goes beyond tumor biology.
I really value the rapport and trust I am able to build with each patient to understand her beliefs, values and desires in order to come up with a treatment plan tailored specifically for her.
What occupational accomplishment are you most proud of?
I am most proud of my fellowship training. I completed an additional year of training after general surgery residency to do rotations in pathology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, breast radiology and plastic surgery to better understand the multidisciplinary approach to breast cancer care. Additionally, I was able to gain further experience in the latest techniques in breast surgery.
In what ways do your personal and professional lives collide?
Family is super important to me. Unfortunately, some of my family members are not around today because of cancer, but my father is around today because of excellent care he received at ProMedica. I treat each patient with the same compassion and care I would want my own family to receive.
Outside of the hospital, I enjoy creating all things arts and crafts, including floral arranging, crochet and painting. With each breast surgery I perform, I have the opportunity to incorporate my love for art and design to deliver my patients with excellent aesthetic results.
Why did you choose ProMedica as your place of work?
I was born in Toledo, Ohio, and completed the majority of my medical and surgical training in Toledo. Some of my best mentors and educators were ProMedica physicians. I was thrilled when an opportunity was available to come back to work with physicians that played a pivotal role in my education and to serve patients in my hometown community.
What makes ProMedica unique when it comes to surgical/oncology care?
The ProMedica Cancer Institute is the only cancer program in the region to maintain collective accreditation by the American College of Radiology, Quality Oncology Practice Initiative, American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC), and National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC).
Additionally, we have the largest breast surgical oncology practice in the region with three women who are dedicated breast surgeons.
