How To Promote Healthy Teen Relationships

Teen dating violence is an issue that affects not just teens but parents, siblings, neighbors, educators and communities. In raising awareness, we can help promote safe, healthy relationships for teens.

What is a healthy relationship?

Healthy relationships are relationships where one feels honest, safe and comfortable. Although no relationship is perfect, a healthy relationship is based on good communication, trust and respect. Healthy relationships do not have to be romantic; the healthy traits can reveal themselves in all kinds of relationships.

Relationships exist on a spectrum, ranging from healthy to abusive. Unhealthy or toxic relationships are somewhere in between. Familiarizing yourself with the spectrum is a great way to visualize a healthy relationship. Healthy relationships are categorized as being honest, respectful, safe, independent and comfortable. Unhealthy relationships lack trust, respect and communication and can lead to abuse. The abusive level includes isolation, manipulation, fear and lack of consent. Abusive relationships are often the most difficult relationships to leave, as the cycle of abuse typically repeats itself. In an abusive relationship, the primary goal of the abuser is to exert power and control over their partner.

Talking to Teens

Starting the conversation early is key. Although it can be difficult, many teenagers do not even recognize they are in an unhealthy relationship, and find it hard to leave once they are already in the relationship. Educating your teen and talking about healthy relationships, warning signs of abuse and relationship red flags are crucial. Red flags include but are not limited to, lack of trust, mistreatment, dishonesty, isolation and manipulation. Teens should know time spent with their partner is important, but proper consent, setting boundaries and personal space is equally important.

Be a Role Model

One of the best ways to promote healthy relationships is to practice them yourself. Show that you treat romantic partners, friends and loved ones with respect and kindness. Be intentional with how you treat and speak to your teen so they are able to recognize unusual and unhealthy behaviors in relationships. Be honest and open with your teen to help improve communication about dating and sexuality.

How To Help

Recognizing the signs and being able to identify if a teen is in an unhealthy relationship is vital. Be nonjudgmental and understanding of their situation and encourage them to come to you for help instead of being upset with them for being in the relationship. Make sure that they know it is not their fault, and allow them to speak to you at their own pace. Contact the local police if you feel they are in grave danger or at risk of being seriously hurt. Support them in any way they need and help them to leave the relationship by providing them with resources, advice and a plan of action.
