When RSV Complications Lead to Pediatric Intensive Care

RSV, or respiratory syncytial virus infection, is a common infection that occurs in babies. In fact, 97% of children are affected by RSV by the age of two, according to the American Lung Association.

RSV can sometimes lead to serious complications that require immediate care. When Jordan and Devon Scott recognized these symptoms in their daughter, Goldie, they took her to the emergency room at ProMedica Toledo Hospital. She was admitted to the hospital and sent to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) for the highest level of care.

For any parent, watching your child in such a vulnerable state is heartbreaking. The kind of care you receive is so important in those life-changing moments.

Here is Goldie’s story, in Jordan’s own words.

Thank You for Caring for our Goldie

I wanted to share a personal testimonial and say thank you to the staff at ProMedica Russell J. Ebeid Children's Hospital.

On March 28th we brought our daughter, Goldie, to the ER at Toledo Hospital due to complications of RSV. The emergency team acted swiftly, as they began treating her immediate symptoms. It didn't take them long to determine she needed oxygen and would need to be admitted. We were moved up to their pediatric floor and were met with compassion and kindness from every team member caring for Goldie. 

After a few short hours, she was sent for an X-ray that confirmed she also had pneumonia. Goldie was under close observation and it was determined she would need more support. She was promptly moved to the PICU where, again, we were met with a team who took exceptional care of our daughter. 

We were listened to and asked follow-up questions that helped us better understand how to treat Goldie in every interaction we had with a member of ProMedica’s staff. Once we were moved out of the PICU, Goldie was still struggling with appropriate oxygen levels. The pediatric pulmonology team continued to search for solutions. Goldie underwent a swallow study that identified that she aspirated nearly everything. Resulting in a nasogastric (NG) tube being placed and an action plan to move forward with.

After 11 days in the hospital, we had answers and a path forward. We never imagined our trip to the ER would result in an extended stay, but we are so grateful for the attentiveness of every individual who was there to take care of our Goldie.

Health care workers truly are a special breed. Thank you for not only caring for our daughter but for caring for our family too.
