ProMedica Leads Midwest with Adoption of Cutting-Edge Surgical Robotics Across System

robotic-assisted surgery

ProMedica is excited to announce the addition of 13 more da Vinci 5 surgical robots, making the health system the first in the Midwest and third in the world to adopt this state-of-the-art technology system-wide. The additional robot installations are currently underway at ProMedica facilities across northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan, and they are expected to be completed by the end of August.

While ProMedica has been a longtime leader in robotic-assisted surgery, this investment emphasizes the health system’s commitment to providing patients with the highest-quality, most advanced care close to home.

The new surgical robots expand surgeons' capabilities and support better patient outcomes. They feature advanced feedback mechanisms to enable gentler surgery; quality metrics and improved precision to increase safety; and other new features to improve the quality of robotic-assisted surgery. For surgical patients, when appropriate, this means enhanced access to minimally invasive procedures with very little pain and quicker recovery times.

“The acquisition of this advanced technology across the system marks a pivotal step forward in our commitment to clinical excellence,” said Kent Bishop, MD, ProMedica chief medical officer. “This investment enables our teams to deliver more precise, efficient, and compassionate care, and ultimately provides better outcomes for the patients we serve.”

Since adopting robotic-assisted surgery in 2008, ProMedica has completed more than 32,300 surgeries. The system also has over 160 surgeons trained in the da Vinci technology and is among the most advanced-robotics teaching facilities for surgeons across the country.

ProMedica Toledo Hospital will be hosting a public demonstration of the new surgical robot and presentation on robotic-assisted surgery on August 5 at 6 p.m. in the lobby between Entrance A and B. Community members and media are invited to attend.
