ProMedica Monroe Cancer Center Unveils New Cutting-Edge Linear Accelerator to Enhance Cancer Care

ProMedica Monroe Cancer Center has introduced a new, state-of-the-art linear accelerator and advanced surface guidance equipment (SGRT) for patient position monitoring, marking a significant advancement in cancer treatment for the Monroe community. This multi-million-dollar investment is part of ProMedica’s ongoing commitment to expanding and modernizing health care services in the region.

The newly installed linear accelerator offers substantial improvements over its predecessor, including:

  • Enhanced Imaging Capabilities: Real-time visualization of tumors and surrounding healthy tissue allows for more accurate treatment planning.
  • Greater Precision: Advanced software and hardware deliver radiation that conforms precisely to the shape of the tumor, and pinpoint radiotherapy allows for the treatment of small, deep, or otherwise inaccessible tumors while minimizing exposure to nearby healthy organs.
  • Versatile Treatment Delivery: Automation streamlines the entire process—from patient setup to radiation delivery—resulting in shorter treatment sessions and reduced side effects.
  • Advanced Patient Positioning: An advanced treatment table allows for precise patient positioning by providing six independent movements, improving treatment accuracy and potentially reducing side effects by better aligning the radiation beam with the target.

Patients will now experience more comfortable and personalized linear accelerator treatments, thanks to new benefits, including:

  • Reduced Time on the Table: Faster delivery means less time in uncomfortable positions.
  • Improved Comfort: Automated table positioning, quieter operation, and customizable features per patient needs. Added scenic ceiling light panels and music to create a more relaxing environment.
  • Tattoo-Free Treatments with SGRT: Advanced imaging eliminates the need for permanent skin markings, offering a more dignified and patient-friendly approach.

“Having access to top-notch cancer care right in the Monroe community brings a sense of comfort to patients during a challenging time in their lives,” said Roger Kucway, MD, radiation oncologist at ProMedica Monroe Cancer Center. “We feel honored to support patients and their families locally, knowing how much this means when facing a cancer diagnosis.”

Since 2020, ProMedica Monroe Cancer Center patient visits have increased by 31%, and treatments have risen by 34%, reflecting the impact of ProMedica’s ongoing investment in providing care close to home.
