Bone and joint pain can slow you down. Whether it’s from an orthopaedic injury or a degenerative condition, such as arthritis, you may not be able to do all the activities you enjoy. That was the case for Denise, Bob and Kelly – three patients who sought regenerative medicine care from Matthew Rennels, DO, and Ryan Szepiela, MD. Now, the three are back to doing what they love.*
Denise: Dancing Again
Denise’s arthritis was making it difficult to get out of bed in the morning due to her stiff knees, causing her to avoid stairs and walk less. After hearing of her coworker’s success with regenerative medicine, she decided to give it a shot.
After Denise’s procedure with Dr. Rennels, she noticed a difference in her symptoms only two months later and they continue to improve over time.
“Dr. Rennels always takes the time with me. I never felt rushed at appointments and he explained it all so well,” Denise says. “His staff was amazing with the blood draws too. Everyone was very friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommended!”
Thanks to regenerative medicine, Denise is back to doing what she loves, dancing and enjoying every moment, and was able to better enjoy her daughter’s wedding a few months after her procedure.
Bob: Doing More at the Gym
Bob was experiencing pain that was keeping him from being active after injuring himself while lifting weights at the gym. After three to four months of experiencing pain, he decided it was time to get help. Bob had friends who had tried steroid injections or had more invasive procedures to deal with pain, but they had little success, so Bob wanted to try a different route.
After one treatment with Dr. Szepiela, Bob felt a lot of relief. And when a bulging disc began causing more pain a few months down the road, Dr. Szepiela was able to perform another treatment that addressed Bob’s pain.
After his procedures, Bob is able to do activities he wasn’t able to do previously – unlimited walking, playing with his dog and progressing in the gym.
“Dr. Szepiela was one of the few doctors who spent a lot of time trying to figure out what was truly wrong and didn’t just rely on an MRI for answers,” Bob shares. “He focused on the area of concern and came up with a plan for my care. After 20 years of back problems, Dr. Szepiela and his team helped tremendously.”
Kelli: Back to Yoga, Better Sleep
Kelli enjoys leisurely walking, loves to practice yoga, and used to be a slalom water skier. In 2014, Kelli tore her left hip labrum while water skiing. Ever since, Kelli experienced challenges with
movement on the left side of her body. She experienced pain that traveled from her left hip to her knee that would take her breath away while practicing yoga, she had trouble easily getting out of the car and she could no longer sleep on her left side.
Kelli dealt with this pain for 12 years, but when her pain level reached an unmanageable level, she knew something had to be done. Four months of physical therapy provided no relief. Kelli didn’t want to have surgery, despite the recommendation from two orthopaedic surgeons that a full hip replacement was the only solution. She had previously undertaken research on regenerative medicine for her mom, so she reached out to Dr. Szepiela and his team.
“I was extraordinarily pleased with having all my questions and concerns answered. Dr. Szepiela and the team were great!” says Kelli.
Dr. Szepiela used platelet-rich plasma therapy and Regenexx-SD injectate for Kelli’s left hip joint, followed by more platelet-rich plasma therapy. A few days after the Regenexx-SD injectate, Kelli felt great and had no discomfort at night. After the second round of platelet-rich plasma therapy, she had almost no pain at all.
Now, Kelli is back to full yoga practice, walking with no pain and can sleep on her left side again. She even enjoyed dancing at a wedding reception recently.
Understanding Regenerative Medicine
Regenerative medicine is a same-day, nonsurgical procedure that treats common injuries and degenerative joint conditions. Regenerative cells, either from bone marrow concentrate or platelet rich plasma, are growth cells found naturally in the body. They adapt to become almost any type of cell and help heal hard-to-repair tissues like cartilage. By using your own body’s healing growth factors, regenerative medicine physicians may treat damaged tissues, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, spinal discs and bones.

*Like all medical procedures, procedures using Regenexx lab processes have a success and failure rate. Patient reviews and testimonials on this site should not be interpreted as a statement on the effectiveness of treatments for anyone else.
