Pediatric Sickle Cell Disease Care in Toledo, Ohio

The Pediatric Sickle Cell Disease and Hemoglobinopathy Clinic, which started in 1996, cares for patients with all forms of sickle cell disease.

At the clinic, children receive comprehensive care, preventive therapy such as prophylactic antibiotics and immunizations, and important screening for stroke risk and other known complications. They also have access to treatment, such as hydroxyurea and other new treatment options for sickle cell disease.

Parents of children who receive an abnormal newborn screening, whether for sickle cell trait, thalassemia or other hemoglobin variants, are provided counseling and education through the clinic in conjunction with the Region III Ohio Department of Health Newborn Screening Coordinator.
