Protect Your Health With a Lung Cancer Screening

In its early stages, lung cancer doesn't have many signs. A low-dose CT scan is quick and painless and can find lung cancer early when it's easiest to treat. Our screening locations throughout northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan help you get a screening quickly and close to home.

Schedule Your Lung Cancer Screening

Most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, cover lung screenings for people at a high risk of lung cancer. But first, you’ll need an order from your physician.

Talk to your ProMedica Physician about a lung cancer screening. Once you receive an order from your physician, call 419-291-3000 or 800-479-8805 to schedule.

Who should get a lung cancer screening?

A lung cancer screening is recommended for those ages 50 to 80 with a high risk of lung cancer. You may be considered high risk if you:

  • Currently smoke or have stopped smoking within the last 15 years.
  • Have smoked at least one pack of cigarettes a day for 20 years or at least two packs a day for 10 years.

Early detection of lung cancer through screening is key to finding the cancer when it is easiest to treat.

What To Expect from a Lung Cancer Screening

Lung cancer screenings are quick and painless. No preparation, lab tests or IVs are required. The only tool used is a lose-dose CT scan that takes 15 minutes or less.

A low-dose CT scan takes a series of X-rays from different angles of your lungs. We then compile these X-rays to look for anything that may be a sign of lung cancer. Low-dose CT scans are different from regular CT scans because they have one-fifth the amount of radiation.

Results are provided to your doctor within 24 to 48 hours. Most people who get screened do not have lung cancer. However, if you do have a positive result, we will get you connected to our care team right away. They will help guide you in your next steps and treatment plan.

Know the Facts About Lung Cancer

Lung cancer doesn’t have many symptoms in its early stages. However, some people with lung cancer may experience a constant or wet smoker’s cough, bone pain, coughing up blood, repeated lung infections or weight loss.

Lung cancer is the second most common cancer.

Each year, more people in the United States die of lung cancer than breast, colorectal and prostate cancer combined. It's the nation's leading cancer killer.1

Cigarette smoking is the No. 1 cause of lung cancer.

Cigarettes are linked to about 80% of lung cancer deaths.1 If you smoke, your risk of developing lung cancer is much higher compared to those who don’t.

Other types of tobacco may increase your risk.

Using pipes or cigars, breathing secondhand smoke and being exposed to asbestos or radon may increase your risk. Your family history also affects your risk.
