Understanding MRI

In order to diagnose a disease or confirm your treatment's effectiveness, your doctor sometimes needs high-resolution images of your organs or other parts of your body. To get these images, your doctor may order an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan.

How does MRI work?

MRI is a technique that uses radio waves and a magnetic field to gather these necessary images. During an MRI, you'll lie inside an MRI machine (in most cases). It's here that the magnetic field inside the machine will re-align itself with your body and, paired with radio waves, will give off faint signals.

Your radiology technician or nurse will record the signals and images and report them to your radiologist who, in turn, will interpret the findings. These findings help with diagnosis and treatment recommendations.
