Understanding Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a technique that uses soundwaves and a computer to create pictures of the inside of your body. Ultrasound gives your doctor a clearer picture of your tissue and organs so you get a concise diagnosis and the most effective treatment. Your doctor may order an ultrasound for your:

• Heart.
• Kidneys.
• Liver.
• Blood Vessels.
• Fetus, if you're pregnant.
• Other organs or body parts.

What can you expect from your ultrasound?

It's a simple and painless procedure that can be done right in your doctor's office or at one of our radiology centers.

You'll lie on a table while your doctor or ultrasound technician guides a smooth instrument over your skin in the targeted area. Though you won't hear them, soundwaves are sent through your body where they'll bounce off your body's tissues. The instrument also receives the soundwaves that bounce back. The ultrasound machine will interpret these into a picture that your doctor can review and then make an assessment.
