What is antibiotic stewardship?

Antibiotic prescriptions are important medicines that help our bodies fight bacterial infections. Misusing these medicines can lead to antibiotic resistance, which means they are no longer effective. To protect patients and our community, we are committed to the responsible use of antibiotics (also known as antibiotic stewardship).

At ProMedica Urgent Care, we are committed to leading our industry forward in improving the use of antibiotics. As a result of our diligent practices, we were awarded the Antibiotic Stewardship Commendation by the Commission on Ambulatory and Urgent Care Quality (CAUCQ).

Responsible antibiotic use includes reducing unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions. It also means educating patients on how to use them. We're committed to developing organization and collaborative solutions, which include:

  • Supporting the tracking and reporting of antibiotic use.
  • Providing ongoing education for urgent care providers and patients about antibiotic stewardship.
  • Implementing procedures that support providers in practicing evidence-based antibiotic prescribing.
  • Supporting scientific evidence that enhances our knowledge, leads to stewardship interventions and builds effective resources for providers and patients.

We understand the pressing need for action to preserve the use of these life-saving drugs. We're working to immediately reduce unnecessary antibiotic use while ensuring patients receive the best care and treatment possible. Many challenges lie ahead in the fight against antibiotic resistance. Together we will maximize our chance for success.
