ProMedica Toledo Hospital with The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences Offer Newly FDA Approved Treatment Device for Brain Aneurysms

TOLEDO, Ohio, April 3, 2019 - ProMedica Toledo Hospital and The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences (UTCoM) is pleased to offer a new cutting edge treatment for brain aneurysms, called the Woven EndoBridge (WEB) Aneurysm Embolization System. Recently gaining FDA approval, the WEB device is used to treat wide neck bifurcation aneurysms in certain areas of the brain.

A brain aneurysm is an abnormal bulging or ballooning of a blood vessel in the brain called an artery. An estimated six million people in the United States have an unruptured brain aneurysm.

The device is made from ultra-fine wires braided together to form a flexible self-expanding mesh. When placed inside the aneurysm sac, the WEB device’s proprietary microbraid technology disrupts blood flow to treat challenging aneurysms that often require multiple implants with a single device. Additional benefits include:

  • Avoids stent placement in the brain's arterial system.
  • Provides an alternative therapy to open brain surgery for those previously unable to be treated minimally invasively.
  • May reduce medication required post-procedure.

“This new device is a game changer for patients with complex brain aneurysms. Prior to this major advent in endovascular therapy, treatment was far more risky and difficult for those patients,” says Syed Zaidi, MD, Medical Director, Interventional Neurology Program, ProMedica Toledo Hospital. “Together with The University of Toledo College of Medicine, Toledo Hospital has become a leading site for aneurysm treatment.”

Since it’s launch in March, NeuroEndovasular Surgeons and assistant professors of neurology at UTCoM, Drs. Mouhammad Jumaa, Syed Zaidi and Richard Burgess, have performed six successful procedures with this device. Toledo Hospital is the first comprehensive stroke center to offer this new treatment modality in Northern Ohio and Michigan.
