Lymphedema refers to excessive swelling of one or more extremities following damage to the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a complicated system in the body that helps to carry fluid, bacteria and harmful substance through a series of lymph nodes that "clean" the fluid.

When lymph nodes are damaged or surgically removed, the system can malfunction and lead to excessive and sometimes uncontrollable swelling in the body. This can often happen as a result of cancer and the treatment associated with it. Lymphedema can be a debilitating disease that has a significant impact on the ability to perform everyday tasks.
