When was your last mammogram?

Mammograms can help detect changes in your breasts before you can feel or see anything. This is especially useful in detecting breast cancer early, when it’s easiest to treat.

Annual mammograms are recommended starting at age 40 for women with an average risk of breast cancer. Schedule your mammogram today!

Schedule Your Screening Mammogram

Scheduling is quick and easy. But first, you'll need an order from your health care provider.

  1. Talk to your ProMedica OB-GYN, Midwife or primary care provider about getting an order.
  2. Once you have an order, call 800-479-8805 to schedule your mammogram, or schedule through ProMedica MyChart.

What To Expect at Your Appointment

We're committed to helping you feel as comfortable as possible during your mammogram. At your mammogram screening appointment, we will talk about your family and health history. We will also explain the mammogram process before it starts.

During the mammogram, you may experience pressure, but it should not cause any pain. The mammogram itself takes about 30 minutes.

Different Types of Mammograms

Your provider will determine what type of mammogram is best for you based on your risk for breast cancer and breast density. Regardless of what type of mammogram you receive, the experience is similar.

Digital Mammogram

During your mammogram, your breast is compressed between two flat surfaces and X-rayed. The high-definition X-ray images are then displayed and recorded on a computer monitor.

Your provider may recommend digital mammography if you:

  • Are under 50 years old.
  • Have dense breasts.
  • Haven't been through menopause or have gone through it within the past year.

3D Mammogram

The experience of a 3D mammogram (tomosynthesis) is similar to that of a digital mammogram. The machine will move in an arc during the exposures and the technologist may ask you to hold your breath briefly during the exposures. The time between images may take a little longer as the technologist waits for the image to be constructed.

This screening test produces a 3D image of the breast which allows doctors to examine breast tissue layer by layer. This helps them spot abnormalities not visible in a 2D image from a traditional digital mammogram

3D mammography has quickly become the gold standard for diagnostic breast exams. Your provider may recommend a 3D mammogram because of the following benefits.

  • 3D mammograms detect 41% more invasive breast cancers. Allowing these cancers to be found when they are smaller and more effectively treated.
  • 3D mammography has reduced immediate recalls for additional imaging by 40-50%.
  • 3D technology allows the radiologist to more effectively read mammograms of women with dense breast tissue. This decreases the need for additional tests.

Insurance Coverage of 3D Mammograms

More and more insurance companies are covering 3D mammography. Medicare currently pays for the procedure, as do many commercial insurances. Unfortunately, there are still some insurance companies that deny the charge.

They may claim it is not medically necessary or experimental. Please check with your insurance company regarding coverage for tomosynthesis before scheduling your appointment.

If your insurance company denies your claim, the additional charge you may be responsible for is $51. ProMedica will provide you with a copy of an appeal letter to send to your insurance company. Instructions should be included with your explanation of benefits (EOB) on how to appeal a denial.

If you file an appeal with your insurance company, please notify ProMedica Customer Service at 844-373-0871. We will suspend your $51 charge, pending an outcome of the appeal.

Additional Exams and Imaging

At ProMedica, we offer the following exams and imaging to support or supplement mammograms:

  • Clinical breast exams: During your yearly wellness visit, your OB-GYN will check for lumps or any changes in your breast tissue.

  • Molecular breast imaging (MBI): MBIs use FDA-approved technology to detect breast tumors. This imaging may be used for women who have dense tissue or high-risk women who can’t tolerate an MRI.

  • Breast MRI: A breast MRI uses a computer, magnetic field and radio waves to produce images of your breast tissue. This can help find out how far cancer has spread. It can also track cancer treatment or rule out cancer in women at high risk.

  • Breast ultrasound: A breast ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of your breast tissue. This may be used to investigate abnormalities found on a mammogram.

Should you need any follow-up care after your mammogram, ProMedica Cancer Institute is here at every step of the journey. As part of the largest cancer program in the region, our highly trained team is ready to answer your questions and guide you in your health.
