Pediatric Asthma: Help Your Child Regain Control

When your child has a hard time breathing, it can be hard to catch your breath, too. That's why our team of pediatric pulmonologists, pediatric sleep specialists, registered nurses and respiratory therapists are here to help.

A Program Dedicated to Supporting Your Child’s Every Breath

ProMedica Russell J. Ebeid Hospital's asthma program is the first to be dual-certified for inpatient and outpatient care by The Joint Commission – a recognition that fewer than a dozen organizations in the United States have achieved. We meet the highest national standards for quality and safety in asthma diagnosis, treatment and education.

Childhood asthma in Lucas County is widespread. It affects 5% of children under the age of five, 15% of children under the age of 11, and 21% of children in grades 6 through 12. Of children diagnosed with asthma, 32% are African American.

At ProMedica Ebeid Children's Hospital, the goal of our asthma program is to help minimize the frequency and severity of a child's symptoms. Working directly with affected children and their families, we help them understand and manage their condition. This reduces their risk for emergency room and hospital visits, and improves quality of life. Our patient care program offers a wide spectrum of services and support, including:

  • Controller medicines to decrease symptoms and prevent asthma attacks.
  • Education on personal asthma triggers, such as allergies, smoke, exercise and cold air.
  • How to understand the differences among medicines and how to take the right one at the right time.
  • Personalized Asthma Action Plans to help monitor and manage symptoms and document key healthcare contacts. The plans can be shared with schools, athletic coaches and day care providers.
  • Rescue medicines for sudden attacks.

Experts in Pediatric Pulmonary Conditions

The board-certified specialists in our pediatric pulmonary clinic are committed to providing excellent care for your child. We follow nationally recognized guidelines and advise on the most up-to-date medicines.

Most importantly, we make sure families understand how to help their children with the right treatments and symptom management for asthma and other respiratory disorders, including chronic cough, apnea of infancy, cystic fibrosis, sleep disturbances and more.
