Pediatric Sleep Medicine

If your child doesn't sleep well at night, it can be hard on the entire family. At ProMedica Russell J. Ebeid Children's Hospital, our pediatric sleep medicine specialists work with you and your child to identify and treat sleep conditions so that everyone can have a restful night's sleep.

About Pediatric Sleep

Pediatric sleep disorders are very common and can often have a negative impact on a child's health. The American Academy of Pediatrics estimates that sleep problems affect 25 to 50% of children and 40% of adolescents.

Our board-certified specialists at our pediatric sleep medicine clinic understand that when a child does not get enough quality sleep through the night, it can lead to daytime consequences.

Evaluation and Treatment

During a visit to our clinic, patients can expect to undergo a comprehensive evaluation by our care team. Patients will be screened for sleep and behavioral problems and given a medical and airway evaluation. A sleep study may be ordered for a more thorough investigation of the patient’s sleep pattern.

During the sleep study, you will spend the night with your child in a private room while they are monitored while they sleep. You and your child will go home in the morning and the results of the study will be evaluated by a sleep specialist. Results of the study are usually available within two weeks of completion. Based on results of the sleep study, a treatment plan or referral will be done.

Experts in Pediatric Pulmonary Conditions

Most importantly, we make sure families understand how to help their children with the right treatments and symptom management for sleep disorders and other respiratory disorders, including asthma, chronic cough, apnea of infancy, cystic fibrosis and more.

Experts in Pediatric Sleep Conditions

It's crucial for children who experience sleep issues to receive a thorough investigation to achieve an accurate diagnosis. Our specialists identify and treat a range of sleep problems, including:

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is when a child has snoring and nighttime awakenings as their breathing briefly stops while they sleep. This is a common condition in children and frequently requires treatment that is dependent on the severity and the child's age.

Nightmares and Night Terrors

These are both very common in children and usually do not require significant treatment. However, it is important to differentiate these from disorders that require treatment.

Insomnia (Difficulty Sleeping)

When a child has trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or both. There are many possible causes for insomnia, such as behavior, delayed sleep phase, medications or an underlying medical diagnosis.

Hypersomnia (Sleepiness)

Hypersomnia is when a child is sleepy during the day, even after a full night of sleep. A sleep study may be necessary to help determine the quality of your child's sleep.

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)

When a child experiences uncomfortable feelings in their legs while they are laying down at night. They may have the irresistible urge to move their legs, preventing them from falling asleep.

Sleep Walking, Sleep Talking, Confusional Arousal and Teeth Grinding

Sleep walking, sleep talking, confusional arousal and teeth grinding are undesirable events that can occur during a child's sleep that may be associated with poor quality sleep.
