Comprehensive Evaluation of Neck and Back Pain

With ProMedica Spine Care, you’ll receive prompt access to a convenient, comprehensive evaluation of your back, neck or spine pain, with a quality diagnosis. After a thorough evaluation and possible testing, we’ll recommend a comprehensive, focused spine treatment plan.

Our clinics are open to anyone who is looking for neck pain treatment or back pain treatment. Here are some important things to know:

  • You do not need a referral.
  • You do not need prior work-up or testing.
  • Your pain may be from a new or old injury.
  • Your pain may be new or chronic.
  • Patients with all levels of pain are welcome.
  • You may already be receiving treatment or want a second opinion.

Testing and Diagnosis of Your Spine Issue

For an accurate diagnosis, our team of specialty-trained certified nurse practitioners may order and interpret appropriate diagnostic studies to begin your customed care plan.

Your testing may include:

  • X-ray: Radiation is used to develop images of more dense parts of the body, such as bones and tissue.
  • Computed tomography (CT) scan: This series of X-rays takes various images of different angles of targeted body parts.
  • Discogram. This x-ray procedure uses contrast dye to examine the disks in the spine.
  • EMG (electromyography). This test looks for neuromuscular issues by measuring how a muscle responds to nerve stimulation.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Using radio waves and a magnetic field, an MRI captures high-resolution images.
  • Myelogram. Using contrast, this test looks for problems in the spinal canal, spinal cord and nerve roots.

Understanding the Cause of Your Pain

Your spine and spinal cord work together as a complex network to help control your nervous system. This includes bones, called vertebrae, which protect your spinal cord. Between those bones are disks, which help absorb shock and make your spine flexible.

Your spinal cord sends information to your brain and your body. When something happens to your spine, the pain is sharp and more severe because of all the nerves and impulses in that part of your body. There are several neck and back pain causes, which can make it complicated to treat.

Conditions that may cause pain in your spine can include:

  • Arthritis.
  • Bulging, herniated or ruptured disks.
  • Curvature of the spine, including scoliosis.
  • Overuse injuries.
  • Sciatica.
  • Spinal stenosis (narrowing).
  • Sprains, strains or fractures.
  • Trauma.

Whatever the cause of your pain, ProMedica Spine Care is here to help. We’ll get you started on your path to healing.
