ProMedica Russell J. Ebeid Children’s Hospital’s NICU Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Serving Patients

TOLEDO, Ohio, March 3, 2023 – The Hillabrand Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at ProMedica Russell J. Ebeid Children’s Hospital is celebrating 50 years of serving the community. The unit opened its doors in 1973 as a seven-bed unit and has since evolved to offer 72 beds, providing high-quality, innovative care for critically ill newborns. The Hillabrand NICU is the region’s largest Level IIIb NICU, serving over 25 hospitals across 27 counties in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan.

The Hillabrand NICU is staffed 24/7 by in-house, board-certified neonatoligsts and certified neonatal nurse practitioners. It provides services such as subspecialty care, mechanical ventilation with neurally adjusted ventilatory assist (NAVA), multiple ventilatory modes, utilization of nitric oxide, whole body cooling; surgical management, dedicated NICU transport via ground or air, education, simulation training, research, and national outreach.

The Hillabrand NICU team has provided compassionate, high-quality, exceptional care to thousands of newborns and their families over these past 50 years.  Each year, those families and children are invited to come back to celebrate with the NICU team at the annual NICU Reunion.
