ProMedica Fostoria Community Hospital Now Offering Innovative Care with LUCAS Device

ProMedica Fostoria Community Hospital announced today that its emergency department can now treat patients who present with sudden cardiac arrest symptoms with a Lund University Cardiopulmonary Assist System (LUCAS) device.

Depending on the severity of the patient’s condition, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) could be needed as a life-saving act for an extended period of time. This has proven to be a strenuous task for health care workers and often leads to staff needing to take turns to provide high-quality manual compressions.

The LUCAS device takes this strain off clinical team members by providing consistent, effective and uninterrupted CPR on the patient. This allows medical staff to focus on delivering other patient care tactics, including defibrillation, intubation, IV placement and, if needed, transportation.

“The addition of the LUCAS device to the Emergency Department in Fostoria allows the staff taking care of patients who need CPR to focus on other just as important aspects of care, in these critical moments,” said Sally Simcoe, RN, ProMedica Fostoria Community Hospital emergency department nurse manager. “Good quality CPR is the key to patient survival, and we hope to see better outcomes with the use of this device.”

The LUCAS device was obtained thanks to a grant received from the ProMedica Fostoria Community Hospital Foundation.
