ProMedica is pleased to announce the opening of a new Food Clinic at 2751 Bay Park Dr., Suite 110E, Oregon, Ohio, inside the Medical Office Building at ProMedica Bay Park Hospital. This is the third Food Clinic location, with two others at the Center for Health Services and the ProMedica Health and Wellness Center.
The new location will be open on Thursdays and will provide food to patients in need of healthy food at home. In 2018, over 1,600 ProMedica patients in the Bay Park region screened positive for food insecurity. Patients screening positive can receive a referral from a ProMedica primary care provider to visit the Food Clinic at any of the three locations.
“The opening of ProMedica’s third Food Clinic location is just one way for us expand our reach in the community and to continue addressing food insecurity and ensuring people have access to healthy food,” said Kate Sommerfeld, President, Social Determinants of Health at ProMedica.
The ProMedica Food Clinic launched in April 2015 as a commitment to addressing food insecurity as one of the many social determinants of health in the community. The idea of the Food Clinic is “food is medicine.” Patients can shop for two to three days’ worth of food for their household per visit, once per month for up to six months, at which time patients can return to their provider for another referral if needed.
Patients are able to choose their own foods from the clinic, alongside an expert who considers the patient’s needs, health conditions and lifestyle. In addition, patients can receive nutrition counseling from a dietitian, nutrition education from a dietetic technician, healthy recipes, and connection to community resources. Since opening in 2015, the Food Clinics have served more than 6,600 unique households through more than 28,000 patient visits.
