ProMedica announced today that ProMedica Toledo Hospital and ProMedica Bay Park Hospital both received an A+ overall score in the new Lown Institute Hospitals Index, which evaluates clinical care as well community impact in terms of health equity and inclusivity.
ProMedica Toledo Hospital is among the top 10 highest-ranking hospitals in Ohio.
The ranking system compared the performance of over 3,200 hospitals across the country, measuring three categories:
- Civic leadership – reflects an assessment of pay equity, community benefit spending, and inclusivity to evaluate how strongly hospitals are engaged with improving community health and well-being.
- Value of care - reflects how well a hospital avoids the use of low-value services, medical services that offer no clinical benefit to patients and may harm them.
- Patient outcomes - reflects a hospital's performance as it relates to its patients' health and experience of care. This category is calculated from three components: clinical outcomes, patient safety, and patient satisfaction.
According to the Lown Institute, its new index is the first hospital ranking to take into account how much hospitals spend on community benefits, as well as the proportion of low-income patients they serve. It is also is the first hospital ranking to take into account how well hospitals serve people of lower income or education levels, and people of color. “At a time when communities are relying on them like never before, hospitals must rethink what it means to be great,” said Vikas Saini, M.D., president of the Lown Institute. “COVID-19 highlights how hospitals are essential community partners for anyone in need. To be great, however, a hospital cannot only provide care that’s high in quality. It must also deliver value and advance equality. Our index is designed to help them do just that.”
“We are proud to be recognized at a high level for our strong commitment to our patients, our employees and community,” said Dawn Buskey, president of ProMedica metro region acute care. “We are driven by our mission to improve health and well-being for every individual.”
