ProMedica, a mission-based, not-for-profit health and well-being organization, announced that ProMedica Toledo Hospital is ranked among America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Surgery, according to recent research released by Healthgrades, the leading resource that connects consumers, physicians and health systems. The hospital also ranked among America's 100 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Care for the ninth year in a row. Each year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 32 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions using Medicare data, and all-payer data from 16 states for bariatrics and appendectomy procedures.*

According to Healthgrades, the hospitals that have achieved the Healthgrades America’s Best Hospitals recognition for specialty service lines have demonstrated exceptional quality of care. For example, Healthgrades compared America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Surgery Award recipients as a group, to all other hospitals, as a group, and found that from 2017-2019, patients treated at hospitals receiving the America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Surgery Award have, on average, 54.4 percent lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.

“Now more than ever, consumers understand the importance of hospital quality and starting to become more diligent when researching where they receive care,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. “When selecting a hospital, consumers can feel confident in the America’s 50/100 Best Hospitals for specialty service lines for their commitment to quality care and exceptional outcomes.”

ProMedica Toledo Hospital also received the following recognition from Healthgrades for superior clinical care achievements:

  • One of Healthgrades America's 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement™ for 6 Years in a Row (2016-2021)
  • One of Healthgrades America's 100 Best Hospitals for Pulmonary Care™ for 7 Years in a Row (2015-2021)
  • One of Healthgrades America's 100 Best Hospitals for Gastrointestinal Care™ for 8 Years in a Row (2014-2021)
  • One of Healthgrades America's 100 Best Hospitals for General Surgery™ for 3 Years in a Row (2019-2021)
  • Critical Care Excellence Award™ (2021)
  • Stroke Care Excellence Award™ (2021, 2019)

“We are thrilled to be recognized among the very best in the nation for numerous specialty services we provide at ProMedica Toledo Hospital,” said Dawn Buskey, ProMedica president of acute care. “As the only hospital cardiac program in the Toledo area to receive the America’s 50 Best Hospitals specialty designation, we hope our community members feel more confident than ever that they can stay close to home and still access the expertise that drives the best clinical outcomes.”

Buskey added, “The Healthgrades’ recognition wouldn’t have been possible without continuous dedication from our highly trained physicians and healthcare teams. Even with the challenges presented by the pandemic this year, they have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to delivering the highest quality care to our patients.”

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures, and evaluated outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 16 states. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected). * Statistics are based on Healthgrades analysis of MedPAR data for years 2017 through 2019 and represent three-year estimates for Medicare patients only. For appendectomy and bariatric surgery, Healthgrades used inpatient data from 16 states that provide all-payer data for years 2016 through 2018.
