Total Hip Replacement – Anterior Approach

The anterior approach hip replacement refers to a minimally invasive surgical technique done from the front of the hip. Since the technique does not cut muscle or tendons, it reduces the risk of injury to muscles, soft tissue, tendons, vessels and nerves. Surgeons believe advantages to this approach may also include earlier and easier recovery, less pain and unrestricted movement after surgery.

Brian Hecht, MD received extensive training for the anterior approach and has been performing the hip replacements at Fostoria Community Hospital since September 2018. While Dr. Hecht has been doing traditional hip replacements for many years, he believes in the future of the anterior approach. “The difference is in the recovery,” he says, “because there is no muscle or tendon cutting, which mean less pain and faster restored mobility. This results in less chance for dislocation, shorter time in the hospital, less pain, a better range of movement, and less damage to muscles and soft tissues.”

Dr. Hecht refers to the anterior hip approach as a “game changer” as it will restore quality of life in a fraction of the time in comparison to traditional hip replacements.
