Healing Care Program

Cancer and its treatment are stressful for the patient and their family. ProMedica Cancer Institute’s Healing Care Program offers free therapies and classes to reduce stress and improve well-being. The program is available to patients and families from diagnosis to two years after the last treatment date.

Healing Care One-On-One Therapies

Complementary therapies can help ease cancer symptoms and treatment side effects. Our Healing Care Program team is specially trained to help patients and their families reduce stress, enhance relaxation and cope. Healing Care may help with:

• Stress, anxiety, worry and sadness.
• Nausea.
• Constipation or diarrhea.
• Tired, low energy.
• Tobacco cravings.
• Trouble sleeping.
• Discomfort or pain.

The Healing Care Program includes the following therapies:

• Acupuncture (fees apply): Specialized, sterile hair-thin needles are inserted into and then removed from specific areas of the body. This may help reduce fatigue and nausea.
• *Aromatherapy: Essential oils are provided for inhalation to help you relax, improve your mood, and ease symptoms.
• *Breathing techniques: to help calm the mind and body.
• Ear seed therapy: Using tiny non-invasive seeds on adhesive tape to put a mild pressure on the outer ears. This may help calm, provide comfort and/or enhance relaxation.
• *Guided imagery: Voice-guided meditation provides positive, healing images and stories to help you cope with and decrease stress.
• *Healing touch: A practitioner provides a gentle touch to help balance and align your energy. This may also be done without touching the body if you prefer.
• *Healthy lifestyle: A provider will give recommendations on how to improve your lifestyle through diet, movement and mental health practices.
• Pressure (PSI) bands: Using pressure point on your wrist, these bands help in reducing nausea.
• Relaxation and meditation: Focusing on breathing and visualization can help soothe the mind and body.
• Relaxing music: Calming music helps to soothe and relax your mind and body.
• Sleep tips: These ideas help prepare your mind, body and room for restful sleep.
• Other helpful resources: Meditation, movement, education, classes and more may be available in your area.

In-person appointments at select locations are scheduled for 15 - 60 minutes in medical oncology, before or after radiation, or at another time you choose, depending on the site. Please call one of the locations to schedule an in-person appointment.
