ProMedica and the ProMedica Foundation are launching the Ebeid Neighborhood Promise Diversity in Nursing Scholarship program aimed at ensuring equitable access to healthcare-related fields, increasing registered nurse (RN) diversity and representation and reducing nursing staff shortages.
According to the recent nursing shortage report produced by the American Hospital Association, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the Joint Commission and the Association of Academic Health Centers, minority student recruitment is identified as a necessary step to addressing the nursing shortage. The report states, “The need to attract students from underrepresented groups in nursing – specifically men and individuals from African American, Hispanic, Asian, American Indian, and Alaskan native backgrounds - is a high priority for the nursing profession.”
The ProMedica Ebeid Neighborhood Promise Diversity in Nursing Scholarship program will create expanded postsecondary opportunities for senior students and graduates of high schools in the northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan region to attend a two-year institution nearby. It will also add to the spectrum of opportunities for individuals graduating from the Ebeid Neighborhood Promise (ENP) State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) program.
“We are thrilled to add this scholarship to the continuum of solutions currently being offered through ProMedica,” said Deana Sievert, DNP, RN, EPB-C, ProMedica chief nursing officer. “ProMedica recognizes the inequities and continues to drive real resources to support opportunities for all people in our region.”
The ENP Diversity in Nursing Scholarship will be applied after eligible state and federal financial aid is distributed. Eligible schools include Owens Community College, Northwest State Community College, Terra State Community College, Monroe Community College and Hondros College of Nursing.
ProMedica is seeking students to apply for the diversity in nursing scholarship, and the application will be available June 1, 2021. Students must agree to a post-graduation, full-time work commitment for three years within ProMedica and maintaining a relationship with an assigned mentor.
“We are excited to support this effort and especially pleased with the thoughtful criteria design,” said Sievert. “This opportunity is designed to draw forward and create opportunities for the great talent that already exists in our region, and also ensure that talent has the support and resources they need to be successful.”
