Testing

We all have aches and pains from time to time. But when aches, swelling and limited range of motion begin to disrupt daily life, it may be time to get help. Talk to your doctor about seeing an orthopaedic specialist who can check for:

  • Alignment issues.
  • Growths or cysts around the joints.
  • Muscle issues.
  • Swollen joints.

An orthopaedic specialist will also check your range of motion and flexibility. If there are problems, you may need diagnostic testing. These tests can include:

  • Arthroscopy: This surgical procedure is used to see inside a joint using small instruments and a tiny camera inserted through a small incision (cut).
  • Blood tests: A variety of blood tests may be used to diagnose rheumatoid arthritis, cancer and other conditions.
  • Bone scans: Your doctor may recommend a bone scan to measure your bone tissue.
  • Computed tomography scans (CT or CAT scan): These scans can create detailed images of your body.
  • Gait analysis: Your doctor may use a gait analysis to pinpoint issues with your structure, limbs and joint rotation.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): MRI technology uses powerful magnets and radio waves to create pictures of what’s happening inside your body.
  • Reflex response: A test used to see how fast your joints and brain respond.
  • X-ray: X-rays help us find injuries, like fractures and cancer tumors.
