As a JVI Vascular Surgery fellow, you will join the million-plus people who call the northwest Ohio region home. You'll find that living in Toledo or one of its many surrounding picturesque townships makes for a truly all-American experience. However, "all-American" certainly does not refer to a small, provincial town; rather, it refers to the diversity of both its citizenry and its environments. Just as the region is home to both cityscapes and countryside, to both industry and agriculture, it is also home to people of all backgrounds working together to make a great community.
In fact, Toledo has been honored three times as an "All-America" city by the National Civic League. This award, given by the oldest community recognition program in the nation, honors the work of citizens who have taken on unusual community challenges and succeeded.
Toledo is home to people of many different cultures and religious faiths. Institutions such as the Multifaith Council of Northwest Ohio emphasize coming together in service to the community by citizens of all backgrounds. Toledo's population includes many who practice non-traditional faiths, but Protestant and Catholic congregations thrive in the area as well. The Catholic Diocese of Toledo serves more than 300,000 Catholics in the area. The area is also home to the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo, which has the proud distinction of serving members from 23 different nationalities. Each year, the Islamic Center hosts the International Festival — one of the many annual celebrations of diverse cultures in Northwest Ohio.
During the summers in Toledo, one often can't go a weekend without hearing about a community street festival. From the LaGrange Street Polish Festival to the Greek Festival to the German-American Festival, the African-American Festival, and the Birmingham Ethnic Festival, there is no shortage of fun, family-friendly events that highlight the fantastic diversity of cultures in the region.
With excellent schools and a low cost of living, Toledo is an ideal place for families. Schools in the region receive high marks on performance report cards when compared to other schools in the state and the nation as a whole. Many of our school districts receive consistent "Excellent" or "Excellent with Distinction" marks. Whether you choose to educate in public or private institutions, you can be confident that the area schools will help your children succeed academically.
The real draw for families (and single residents, too) is the low cost of living in northwest Ohio. In Toledo, the average price of a single-family home is only $132,471 — well below the national average and median. (According to the most recent census figures, the national average and median home price are well into the $200,000 price range.) Toledo residents can also choose from a wide variety of housing types. The city has plenty of established neighborhoods, but it also has areas of new construction, condominiums, and refurbished downtown lofts. For renters, the average price for a two-bedroom apartment is around $750 a month, while house rentals cost an average of $900-$1,000 per month.
Nestled in the heart of the Great Lakes region and at the crossroads of two major interstate systems (I-75 and I-80/90), Toledo offers easy access to travel. Toledo Express Airport (TOL) hosts dozens of daily convenient flights, and international flights can be easily coordinated from nearby Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW). For those who prefer ground travel, Toledo has an Amtrak station, a Greyhound station, and is a stop on a major Megabus route.
