Curriculum and Scholarly Activity

Combining Surgical/Endovascular Experience with Clinical Research Opportunities

The goals of the Jobst Vascular Surgery Fellowship are to clinically integrate the fundamental areas of vascular education and have the fellow apply them in a setting of graduated clinical responsibility at every stage of treatment. Fellows will be responsible for primary outpatient evaluation and follow-up and inpatient consultation and will participate in vascular imaging and physiologic tests in the vascular diagnostic laboratory. Fellows will perform a wide variety of vascular surgical procedures and will also participate in catheter-based endovascular procedures including arteriography, venography, vascular access and guidewire techniques, angioplasty, stenting, atherectomy, laser treatment, radiofrequency ablation, and endovascular grafting for occlusive and aneurysmal disease.

Collaborative learning by small groups of skilled practitioners is essential to the process of medical discovery. As fellows gain exposure to a large and varied surgical volume, they will acquire technical skill and achieve anatomical familiarity and knowledge of alternative strategies. This exposure will also poise residents to begin contributing original research to the field of vascular health and surgery. Fellows will present at case- and topic-oriented conferences, vascular journal club, research seminars and basic science conferences.

Mentoring and Professional Relationships

The Jobst Vascular Surgery Fellowship provides many opportunities for professional growth through working institutional relationships. Fellows interact and work with University of Toledo general surgery residents and students who rotate to ProMedica Toledo Hospital. Fellows also enjoy networking opportunities through our relationship with the University of Michigan.

Conferences

Vascular conferences constitute a vital forum for shared professional experience and developments in clinical practice. Jobst Fellows organize the weekly clinical conference and are encouraged to submit research projects to national and international vascular societies for presentation. Recent graduates have presented papers at regional and national conferences on thrombolytic therapy for acute DVT, outcomes of endovascular and open surgical procedures for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA), venous valve function, and recurrent DVT.

Publications

Fellows are also encouraged to submit research projects to peer-reviewed journals for publication and have the opportunity to work on articles with JVI faculty.
