At ProMedica Cancer Institute, we take a coordinated approach to cancer care that incorporates multidisciplinary teams, specialized services and groundbreaking treatments. Our large cancer registry helps us combine data-driven methods with a personalized approach to cancer care. Each of our patients is guided through treatment by our nurse navigators and care teams.

A History of Exceptional Cancer Care

ProMedica Cancer Institute has a rich history of providing cancer care in our region. In 1975, ProMedica Flower Hospital opened its doors to the Sylvania, Ohio community. Its radiation oncology department had one treatment unit and one simulator. In the decades since, we’ve become known as the center of compassionate, innovative and advanced cancer care in our region. We’re committed to making sure the communities and patients we serve can access the exceptional care and resources they need, close to home.

Our journey to become the Toledo region’s cancer leader began when we opened the inpatient cancer unit at ProMedica Flower Hospital in 1987. It was then overseen by Charles Cobau, MD, and Bahu Shaikh, MD. In 1996, Flower Hospital merged with ProMedica. That’s also when the cancer program at Flower Hospital was chosen as the main site for the regional system’s cancer treatment services.

Over the past 30-plus years — and continuing today — ProMedica Cancer Institute has expanded its cancer center locations. Together, they meet the growing need for high-quality, specialized cancer care in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan.

In southeast Michigan, The Hickman Cancer Center has played an integral role in treating and supporting cancer patients in Lenawee County and the surrounding area since 1991. It was named for our generous benefactors, The Hickman Family. This center provides radiation oncology services and clinical trials, while medical oncology is provided at The Charles and Virginia Hickman Hospital.

The Hickman Family were also benefactors of the Cancer Center at Flower Hospital and in 2008 it was renamed The Hickman Cancer Center at Flower Hospital. This center has 32 treatment areas and three linear accelerators to support and provide state-of-the-art cancer treatment.

The two newest cancer centers, ProMedica Dorothy L. Kern Cancer Center in Fremont, Ohio, and the ProMedica Cancer Center on the campus of Levis Commons in Perrysburg, Ohio, opened their doors to patients in 2016 and 2023 respectively.
